it hung around the room as we all stared at the full ashtray at the center of the table
watching the butts
broken and sad
climbing all over each other in the soft burnt ash
the light fixture on the ceiling shook and the slow movement of the ceiling fan formed the light in the room into heart beats
the pool tables were green felt lungs that breathed
in and out
as people came to them
shot a round
and dispersed back into the room
lips crusted and acidic from last nights vomit
exoskeletons pile up bleached from the sunlight in the sill between the storm windows
the thick wet air held the room tight and gripped everyone's skin
I remember this woman
her body shook and her arms spasmed
her mouth foamed and saliva all sticky and bubbly and stringy came out of her mouth and nose
I had woken up alone on the tile floor of the bathroom
so cold so hard and jagged the way it digs into your skin with masonry and mildew
I turned the stream on cold and splashed it against my face
my eyes were caked with crap and probably bloodshot
they stung from the air
